Another glass of wine—if not
To cheer an aching spirit, then
To douse my sorrows, as again
Burn treble heat, sublimely hot.
From Eskimo to Hottentot,
From prince to pauper, all of men
Have known the thrill of liquor when
The times are hard, so to besot.
It shows weak character, the book
Of Proverbs doth declare; however
As thwarted in my best endeavor
While caught like fish upon the hook
In servicing the lesser, shook
My final confidence, that never
Perhaps had been sufficient clever,
So I was canceled, like a rook.
