Heavenly Father, our post-Carter
America, except some eddies,
Has gone off on a private charter,
A hijacked state
Whose chosen fate
Destabilizes and unsteadies.
A host of frauds, like Billy Graham,
Preached love of money at expense
Of those less fortunate, a sham
Of piety,
And now you see
Immoral acts with no defense.
They tried to tear the public schools—
A thousand ways to undermine them—
To make the public clueless fools
And tools unwitting
Flailing, hitting
Out at the shadows that malign them.
Their own disastrous lack of faith
Has deafened them to words of reason,
As they adhere to what spite saith
Shaming compassion
Out of fashion,
Empathy deigned a form of treason.
It may be seen America
Had reached its peak sincerity
With Jimmy Carter—now men gnaw
At bones like dogs
That demagogues
Have cast them, of the meat stripped free.
