The Religious Right and the Snares of Hypocrisy

They had to look the other way
    To overlook some faults,
Some minor slanders, lies, adulteries, perversions well beyond risqué,
    And sexual assaults,

To have their candidate elected,
    True representative
Self-aggrandizing, self-absorbed, vain, boastful, vulgar, criminally-connected,
    And avaricious (take or give)— 

You can say the Religious Right
    First compromised a little,
Backslid, ignored, abetted, euphemized, excused, colluded, hid the light,
    And changed church wine for spittle,

Then had to make greater concessions
    And compromised a lot:
It shuns all justice, virtue, truth, compassion, fair play, ethics, spirit’s essence
    For three words: “Don’t get caught.”

Thus goes religiosity,
    Ye evangelicals,
Disdaining tolerance, fomenting prejudice and animosity:
    Your God is something else!
