The Pearl
As a man who has held a pearl
And lost it to the sea
Watches as the waters swirl
For an eternity,
So the sad confusion
That now encompasses
I watch, without illusion,
After my happiness.
It was a gem of unknown name,
As formless as the night;
Impossible to catch or tame
As eyes of quick delight.
Turn away, turn away!
The ocean only chuckled,
Every hope must burn away,
And the waters buckled.
You have no concern this way,
Your precious pearl captured,
Nor there is no recovery,
Although you be enraptured.
And the water ebbed and flowed,
There is no recovery,
And I watched it as it moved,
Turn away, said the sea, turn away!
