J’Accuse

7/25/2017

Out of their league they took the helm
Amidst intrigue to run the realm;
Instead of running it was ruined
Though everyone else they impugned.

As though a ship upon a shoal
Within their grip and their control,
The state scraped bottom, sputtered, failed,
While on deck yachters blithely sailed.

Deep in the hull the rest of us
Have felt the pull, incredulous
That such malice aforethought could
Have been insisted something good;

Yet many of our countrymen
Are wont to grovel servile when
A voice authoritarian
Claims with a roar itself “the man.”

So many opted to forgo
Honesty, stopping not the flow
Of lies and slanders parties pushed
To have truth banned and justice crushed.

Yes, these were men a lot like me,
But a dissenter I will be,
And to my fellows not confuse
My tongue but spell it out: j’accuse.

    A new poem is always news to the poet.
    Or whatever.
