How does a nation fall
To such a state
Where honesty counts little if at all
But lies are “great”?
How does a people fail
To laud and praise
Integrity, not mocked as a tall tale
In former days?
A person’s word was bond,
His rectitude
Basis of reputation and beyond,
Fount of all good;
But recently eclipse
Has overtaken
America’s concern for truthful lips,
Rectitude shaken.
How does a body change
So utterly
From what it was before? It feels so strange
And new to me.
Always you had a segment,
This or that,
In whom cheating or fraud prevailed regnant
(No democrat);
Always in any man
At times the lie
Prevails and he becomes a charlatan
Regrettably;
But what makes such a huge
Conglomerate
Embrace dishonesty in a deluge
Uncomely great?
Corruption rampant rife
Spreading like wildfire
Makes conflagration of the good in life,
Never a mild fire.
Can remnants charred
Find reclamation?
The course ahead lies hard, so very hard,
My wayward nation.
