“Because of the chicanery
Enacted to extend
The prized Supreme Court vacancy
A solid year, and send
To me the opportunity,
My now close-bosom friend,
Mitch, had a pledge of loyalty
To which my name I penned.”
The pledge, of course, that Gorsuch made
Might rather have been tacit,
Not in explicit words conveyed
As subtlety would class it,
But understanding was relayed,
However best to pass it,
And Gorsuch knew, a trade’s a trade,
An asset for an asset.
So, cautiously he bit his lip
About the nasty trick,
For if he let a loose word slip,
Apart from rhetoric,
As though making an honest quip
To cut evasions thick—
Then Mitch would all his chances strip
And cut him to the quick.
“I signed my name unto the pledge”
(So Gorsuch may proclaim)
“To serve the wealthy, privilege,
And always tilt the game
To give money the leading edge—
There isn’t any shame
In helping friends, though I may hedge
My words: I signed my name.”
