It was a referendum for
A despot and a king
Or else democracy, its core
Consent in governing.
The masses (no majority,
It short by several millions)
Cast clearcut votes explicitly
Designed to break resilience,
To break the spine of government,
Eviscerate self-rule,
Ideals of justice leaving spent,
Exalting cold force cruel.
For this they voted—by deceit
To camouflage their shame,
As “Either party is a cheat,
In ways and means the same,”
Thus they raised false equivalence
Into justification,
But we know better: cretins hence,
Destroyers of a nation,
It may be that you tout excuse,
But malice drove your hand,
Your spite grown cumbersome obtuse
Until it broke the land.
