Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!
How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!
The above poem by Emily Dickinson is one that was tampered with for its first publication: as I recall, "the livelong June" was transformed into "the livelong day" (aside from punctuation regularization).
The difference is telling. There may be additional changes—but my memory fails me, and they are of little consequence (although within my lifetime the altered versions were yet published). I remembered the line as "To croak one's name". In either case, it seems to me a lot like blogging, but with this caveat: many bloggers realize that there exists no "admiring bog".
It's just more fun to croak...croak...croak. It doesn't mean that any of us listens or is cognizant of the rising cacophony. (For my poem about the frog, click here, though unrelated to this.)
